Categorization and coordinates

[edit]

Hi 4300streetcar, I appreciate the Boston transit images you've been uploading. I do have two requests:

I'm happy to answer any questions you have about either of these - just reply here. Best, Pi.1415926535 (talk) 23:22, 31 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for this information - I will implement these suggestions on new uploads, and I appreciate you correcting the categories on previous uploads. 4300streetcar (talk) 04:15, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Great, much appreciated. For coordinates, you should use {{Location}} for the camera location, or {{Object location}} for the location of the photo subject. You can also use both if you desire, especially if you were photographing something distant or at an unusual angle. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 19:12, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Notification about possible deletion

[edit]
Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Wonderful planespotting photographs!

[edit]

Will note the coords next time I'm on the ground near Logan (I was near there some time ago, but I don't think security would take kindly to me beaching my sailboat on the shore, and Boston Harbor is rather windy). Cheers! JayCubby (talk) 03:16, 22 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! It's been trickier with the cold weather and shorter days, but Logan has excellent variety and is great for planespotting. 4300streetcar (talk) 03:24, 22 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Autopatrol given

[edit]

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. Abzeronow (talk) 20:19, 11 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

There's a bunch of other photos of those that also present FoP issues, such as the rest of Category:Seven Hills Park 4300streetcar (talk) 00:01, 21 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Airliner pictures

[edit]

Thanks for tidying those captions, clearly I was too tired when I was uploading and describing them. By the way, in experimenting with ISO, I've seen a noticeable jump in noise in the R5 between 320 and 400. Nothing that can't be coped with, but I was not expecting that, given how clean it is below 320 compared to my 5Ds. I'm have trouble with United graphics - that slogan at the front of the plane tends to be smeared if I am too aggressive with the post-processing, so for United I think I'll have to use a higher ISO and deal with the noise. Thankfully, the ex-Continental planes lack the slogan for the most part. Acroterion (talk) 12:00, 7 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

No worries. The Commons also seems a bit messy with ER-vs-non-ER distinctions. E.g. all 737-900ER-only operators have their categories named as 737-900, e.g. Category:Boeing 737-900 of Delta Air Lines, though there is a disorganized Category:Boeing 737-900ER that only includes individual registrations. But it felt worthwhile making the distinction in the captions/descriptions.
Good to know about the ISO 320 vs 400 noise - I assumed 400 would have lower noise based on its Photos to Photos dynamic range chart, but guess not. I should test it on my Nikon Z8 as well (comparing ISO 400 vs 500) when I have the chance.
Funnily enough I look at that exact United nose slogan ("Connecting people. Uniting the world.") to see which photos in a sequence are the sharpest and worth processing further and uploading. 4300streetcar (talk) 00:20, 8 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Also, the United Airlines fleet page gallery is still looking for some pics (namely an EvoBlue 777-200 non-ER against the sky, and a 737-900 non-ER in EvoBlue) if you happen to be able to get them from IAD or BWI. Your 787-8 pics were perfect for the gallery.
(The 12 non-ER 737-900's don't seem to fly to very often IAD according to this [1], though there did seem to be an IAD flight on May 2nd [2])
I'm also hunting around for an American A320 pic for the American Airlines fleet page gallery if you happen to have one, since the current pic is watermarked and excessively warm. Though 1-2 of those usually show up to BOS every day, so I may be able to catch one sooner or later. 4300streetcar (talk) 00:39, 8 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I judge how far a given image can be sharpened in post by finding the smallest plausibly-resolvable text and looking for the threshold at which it gets mangled, and then backing off (obviously looking for other artifacts or fringes too). United has that consistent 4" high lettering that is a challenge. Another indicator of oversharpening is the US flag - it goes wonky if you get carried away, but it's often on the far side of the exhaust stream and can be distorted anyway. At a minimum, I make sure the N number isn't fringey.
I rarely get to IAD, it's a little out of the way for me. I have a project near BWI, so I go to the Thomas A. Dixon Jr. Aircraft Observation Area, a county park with lots of parking at the end of 15R/33L, and eat my lunch and decompress from the meetings. Obviously, BWI is 80% Southwest, so there's not a lot of variety, but it's convenient and almost ideal for photography.
American seems only to fly 737s into BWI. My best chance of an American A320 would be Gravelly Point at DCA since American scarcely goes to IAD, but all I have that I like is a 319. I haven't been to DCA since last year.
You can see my QI aircraft at Category:Quality images by Acroterion. Acroterion (talk) 01:26, 8 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I had a site meeting today, and pulled into the lot to eat lunch, and there was an American A321 landing. Not a 320, alas, but so much for my assertion. File:American Airbus A321 N913US BWI MD1.jpg Acroterion (talk) 02:02, 9 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, very nice. I took a quick look on Flightradar24 and it looks like American flight 1495 (from Charlotte) is often an A320, though it was a 737-800 in the past.
Looks like BOS actually gets several A320's a day from Charlotte as well, so once it stops raining in BOS I might be able to head out and get a photo of one as well. 4300streetcar (talk) 03:03, 9 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Here's an American 320 at BWI: File:American Airbus A320 N126UW BWI MD1.jpg. Since it was landing on runway 28 it's a little higher than it would be from the vantage point at 33L, the usual runway. Acroterion (talk) 01:58, 21 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I will leave the existing image in place for now since it's at a bit better of an angle.
I also tried getting a photo of an American A320 at BOS, but wasn't able to get a good side-on angle.

I agree, sooner or later we'll get one that's a good overall depiction. Acroterion (talk) 13:19, 24 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
